Infusing English Conversation Application in English Language Learning

           English Conversation is an application for practicing listening and speaking skill. There is a website version of English Conversation and it can be accessed at htttp://www.talkingenglish.com. The features, categories, and usages of this application can be used in an English classroom.

            There are four features that teachers and students can explore. The first section is listening in which students are able to listen to a conversation on a particular topic. Since there is also a written conversation in this listening section, teachers are able to ask students to pay attention how to pronounce that written conversations through listening practice in this section. The second section is a quiz in which there are several questions regarding the topic in listening section. The questions provided in this section can be used to test students’ listening comprehension. The third section is practice section in which students are able to practice their speaking through a conversation. In this section, there is a role play conversation in which students are able to choose one of the two roles in a conversation. Once they choose one of the two, students are able to make a conversation with a recorded voice provided in this section as their partner. The conversation itself is also provided in a written text. After practicing their speaking, students are able to record their conversation with their partner which is in the form of existing recorded voice in record section. Therefore, students can recall and improve pronunciation after recording.

            There are several categories within the application such as trips and vacation, eating related topics, family and friends, daily life, and much more. Furthermore, each of those categories also has several topics. For example, in trips and vacations category, there are topics such as afternoon picnic, picnic by the lake, going to the lake, and so on. Since there are many topics provided, students are able to choose a particular topic they want, considering their needs.

            This application is suitable for junior high school students as it provides material related to 2013 curriculum in Indonesian education. For example, the modal will is found in the conversation in the form of written text within the application and it is also taught in junior high school level. Students can be asked to download this application to practice their listening and speaking outside the classroom. Since this application is also available on the website, teachers are able to use English Conversation into classroom activities and adjust the features provided for their language teaching.
