Acknowledging Sources Responsibly

By Nikki Leres Mulyati

Writing acknowledgment of sources is very important in academic writing. Ideas that we take from certain authors or experts must be accounted for by including resource recognition. If acknowledgment is not done well, then a work written by an author will be deemed to be copied by another author. It will destroy the reader's trust in the author. Therefore, it is important for us to know the purposes and kinds of acknowledgment.
There are several reasons why we should write acknowledgment on our academic writing. First, it is to maintain the authenticity of our work. Second, it is to build the reader's credence on our writing. Readers can also read the topic deeply by looking at the sources we have listed. Then, including credits to authors whose work we use can present evidence of our arguments.
All forms of material that we use in writing must be accountable. We must include quotation from the author. There are two ways to quote a work or experts’ opinion, namely by direct and indirect quotation. Direct quotation is a statement the authors write using the original sentence from the original source without any modification. This is done to express an important point in a post. We must be selective in stating direct quotation. We may need to quote directly to explain definitions, theories, laws, principles, special terms, and so on.
The second way to present acknowledgment is indirect quotation. It is the idea or fact taken from an outside source and it uses our own words. Indirect quotation can be either summary or paraphrase. This can be done by listing the source on the references page and writing the author's name and the year of publication in the text.
The authenticity of our idea as a writer is needed in academic writing. The form of appreciation that we must give to the author or expert whose ideas we use is to declare quotes directly and indirectly. We must maintain our credibility as the author with responsibility for what we write
