Be Aware on Paraphrasing and Formatting APA Style

According to the Oxford American Dictionary in
Clabaugh (2001) plagiarism is: "To take and use another person's ideas or
writing or inventions as one's own" Some plagiarism action takes place
around us, so it becomes very important for us to anticipate this action. The
act of plagiarism will tarnished and blurred our academic world and it is no
exaggeration to say that plagiarism is an intellectual crime. Paraphrase and
referring are the steps that must be taken into account to prevent us from
plagiarism in
the writing of scientific works.
One of the ways to avoid plagiarism when writing an academic work is to do an indirect
quotation. Quoting indirectly can be manifested in three forms: paraphrasing, summarizing or
concluding. These are three ways of citing that require different skills, and it is important to do
when writing an academic work. The quotations made in paraphrase techniques are quotes that use
their own words to express the same idea. In addition, to make ideas easier to understand, paraphrasing
can also be used to maintain the coherence and integrity of the writing.
Paraphrase is the re-expression of a language
into another language without changing the meaning. There are several things
that must be done in making the paraphrases of a reading. To make oral
paraphrases, the steps are to read the information carefully, record the core
sentence, develop the core sentence into the main idea, convey the subject in
the form of a verbal description with its own sentence, use synonyms, choose equivalent expressions, convert sentences
directly into indirect sentences, or turn active sentences into inactive ones.
An academic work should refer to a good and correct writing system and
recognized internationally. There are many types of writing style formatting
the bibliography, including: APA (American Psychological Association) Style,
Chicago Style, GOST Style, MLA (Modern Language of America), AMA (American
Medical Association), Vancouver, Turabian, and Harvard Style. Each writing
system has its own characteristics how to quote, and the format of the
bibliography. APA styles include the most widely used writing format.
Formatting our essay correctly is important. If we have
good ideas in our essay, how sad it would be for it to be marked lower or
rejected because of inadequate
formatting. APA is an acronym of “The American
Psychological Association.” APA style guidelines are the
standardized writing format, which is commonly used among those who write a
research paper in social sciences. Because
the writing format for electronic media changes rapidly, we can check the APA website for
the latest additions, changes, and more-detailed clarifications at www.apastyle.org.
