How to Present Introductory and Body Paragraph with Strong Argument

By Nikki Leres Mulyati

People use essay to present their ideas about something. In composing essay, we must consider the way we state arguments. There is a need to argue when everyone disagree on something, especially on controversial issues. To present an essay effectively, we need to develop strong argument, attractive introduction, and reasonable body paragraphs.
“Argument is a term often incorrectly applied to quarrels, in which mere assertion and name-calling replace the rational presentation of opinion and reasonable meeting of opposing viewpoints,” said William Vesterman in Reading and Writing Short Arguments.
we argue not only on the subjective view. Describing the argument must be in an effective and reasonable way in order to strengthen our opinion. Arguments must also be supported by logical reasons that can be justified.
Toulmin divided the structure of an argument in six parts. He stated that data, claim, qualifier, warrant, backing, and rebuttal must exist in composing arguments. The existence of data is used to support claims. The qualifier takes a position for forcing or extending of the claim. What is to be proved is the claim. Warrant supports and authenticates the claim, and backing serves to support warrant. We can also argue with the rebuttal part.
The first paragraph of an essay is usually the most important part of the entire essay. Not only to attract the attention of the reader, but also as a beginning that will govern the style of speech and the content of an essay. There is no single best way to start an essay. It can begin in any way. If an essay does not immediately catch readers’ attention in the first paragraph, there is a possibility that they will not continue to read the rest. Because of this, it is better to start the essay with a sentence that draws the reader's attention from the beginning. You may need to start with interesting facts or interesting statistics that are rarely known to attract the reader's attention. On the other hand, if it is suitable for your essay, you can start with an interesting picture or description.
After creating the opening paragraph, then the next step is to create development paragraphs or body paragraphs that are the essence of an essay. In the explanatory paragraphs of thesis statement, the authors must clearly communicate the essay content clearly. The constructed paragraphs must relate to each other to form an authorship goal. In every paragraph, there should be a topic sentence that becomes the main idea, and then it is supported by supporting sentences.
The success of an essay is largely determined by the writer's shrewdness in writing the attention getter at the beginning of the paragraph, the supporting paragraph, and the reasonable argument. We should pay great attention to our writing style on the whole essay, especially on the introduction. The existence of the body paragraphs should support the main topic of the essay. Strong arguments also determine how much our writing can be trusted by people.
